How To Stop Smoking

On average, 5 to 10 attempts to stop smoking are necessary for a smoker. However, giving up should be an achievable goal for all with good strategies and perseverance

We all know how hazardous to our health smoking is. However, despite all the warnings of friends and families, approximately 700,000 Victorians continue to light up regularly.

The smokers among us have their heads in the sand, it’s easy to imagine, but statistics show that at least 82 percent want to quit –and some 50% actually try to quit every year. For average a smoker wants to stop five or ten before they finally make effective use of tobacco. But for all this is unique–some people are able to give up first, while others always attempt.

What’s the big deal, then? Why is this so difficult? We were talking with Dr Sarah White, Ceo of the Victorian QUIT anti-Tobacco Project, to give up and to remain smoke-free.

Each beverage above the recommended levels is more dangerous. A combination of medications – whether illicit or prescribed – may cause severe health problems. Alcohol combinations are the most common drugs.

You’re not only fighting one addiction when you try to stop smoking–you’re really fighting with three people. In Dr White’s opinion, our desire for cigarettes has three distinct, separate parts: a nicotine addiction, an emotional addiction and a customary one.

Cigarettes are the way nicotine is delivered to the bloodstream. You can wear your nicotine addiction with patches or other delivery systems when you decide to give up.

But it is much harder to break mental dependence. It can be extremely complex, which is why most people continue to smoke. For many purposes, we use cigarettes: to punish ourselves, to relax ourselves if things go badly, to calm down and to spend time.

As Dr. White points out, “People who try to stop have to look for a different way to deal with stress and to pay off.”

Third, there’s the usual dependence. This concerns the’ signs’ of your habit, when and where you smoke. Maybe after lunch, or with your morning coffee, you always have a cigarette. On the way home, maybe one or two. And if you’ve got a beer. The patterns were difficult to break.

Smoking is described in the medical profession as a chronic recurrent state–which means that the urge never completely disappears for many people. It can therefore be painfully difficult to quit.

A number of policies that help Victorian smokers abandon QUIT and the Best Health Channel can suggest. There are so many ways to make the current cigarette your last, from choosing’ fatality’ and discarding all temptations, to replacement therapy and online coaching.

Dr. White says that some professional assistance always needs to be provided at the beginning. A call to Quitline[ on 13 7848] can be a good start to your trip by stating, “You can double your chances for success at the price of a local call.” QUIT also provides free, personal online training and free SMS service to help you stay on track.

Although it can be really tough for the first two weeks, you can start fixing your patterns in week three–without knowing that it will not be easier and easier.

The bad news is you first have to go through that awful two weeks. You inevitably suffer from some of the side effects of stopping nicotine when you give up –including irritability, frustration, unrest and concentration difficulties.

During this critical phase, one of the many nicotine replacements that provide nicotine in your body with a ever dwindling supply is worth considering. Also nicotine patches are highly effective.

The more you are conscious of your smoking habits, the more likely new patterns will be created.

Dr White says it can mean a complete shift of practice for heavy smokers. For instance, if you usually have a morning tea cigarette, you should have your morning tea in a place where it is not permitted to smoke. “It’s worth putting you in a place where no tentations are present for at least three weeks. Please take an apple on the way to the train station rather than smoke after work.
